Lomonosov Moscow State University is the biggest and most respected University of the ex-USSR, current Russia and the CIS. Due to historical reasons, since its foundation in 1755, we have offered numerous higher education programs only in Russian language. The University still dominates “The World of the Russian Language”, and although many international students have graduated from LMSU, all of them have had to study Russian to be able to study Math, Geology, Physics and Chemistry, and Biology. Although Russian language is beautiful and intertesting, we doubt that it would be reasonable for someone to study it only to be able to study at least Biology. Hence we decided to launch some Master programs in English to ensure those who are interested in getting top University education in this field in Moscow do not feel discriminated.

This website is about Master programs, summer/winterschools and other options for English-speakers that Lomonosov MSU Faculty of Biology offers.

While we will not produce big number of various programs, as we do not want to spoil quality with quantity at all, we intend to make the scope of the programs wide. We would like you to be able to choose between Ecology and Nanobiotechnology, and between complete two-year Master and a brief but fascinating short schools and workshops. Some programs are developed in cooperation with our international partners.

Brief description

The program in Ecology at Lomonosov Moscow State University is a complete Master level degree program provided by Lomonosov MSU Faculty of Biology, the leading academic institution of Russia. The program is aimed at training highly qualified specialists with profound knowledge and expertise in the field of general and applied ecology. A Master will be able to successfully deal with conceptual issues and practical problems related to various subflields of ecology and environmental science. A Master will be ready to function as an expert in making decisions regarding complex situations and controversial issues related to environmental management and protection.

Description

Ecology studies biological organisms’ interaction among each other and with their environments. The Program:

  • Concentrates upon the operation of biological systems at various organization levels, including those of the organism, the population, the ecosystem, the landscape, the biome, and the entire biosphere.
  • Enables the students to develop biopolicies to deal with ecological problems caused by environmental pollution, the disruption of the ecological matrix of an area, and biodiversity-endangering factors.
  • Provides analytical tools for processing information on the biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem
  • Sets forth conceptual approaches to assessing ecological data sets, including multidimensional statistical methods, geo-informational systems, network analysis, and mathematical modeling.

Teaching all subjects in English makes the courses available for foreign students including those within the frames of international student exchange programs. The courses enable the students to critically evaluate the achievements and shortcomings of the world’s ecological/environmental science and practical policies

Competencies

As a result of the course you will gain the following special competences:

  • In-depth knowledge enabling you  to professionally conduct independent theoretical and experimental studies in the field of modern ecology,  adequately set forth  the results obtained thereby (orally and in writing), and be actively involved in various kinds of environment-related scientific events (Special Competence 1)
  • Capacity to employ the cutting-edge analytical tools of a whole gamut of ecology subfields concerning biological systems at various organization levels ranging from a single organism to the whole biosphere and to evaluate the conceptual importance and the practical value of a scientific research project and to analyze its results and methodological advantages with respect to fundamental issues in the field of modern ecology, environmental science, and biopolitics (Special Competence 2).
  • Skills enabling you to use computational techniques for assessing ecological information, including statistical data processing methods, geo-informational systems, mathematical modelling, and network analysis. You will be in a position to statistically verify the results of ecological\environmental research and the conclusions drawn therefrom as well as to make scientifically valid predictions (Special Competence 3).
  • Conceptual knowledge in the field of ecology applicable to various stages of practical  research and development activities, in terms (a) of education at academic institutions and (b) of expert assessment and counselling activities involving natural resource management bodies and environmental NGOs (Special Competence 4)
  • Last nor least: Fluency in scientific English as the language of international environment-centered interactivity as well as the ability to conduct discussions on scientific and organizational issues related to environmental protection and management, to give scientifically acceptable presentations on ecologically/environmentally relevant subjects (in English), and to carry out professional-level research work at any English language-using institution (Special Competence 5)

Prerequisites

Applicants are expected to have general skills in: microscopy, statistics… and have completed University courses in zoology, botany. A Bachelor degree is required.

Master in Nanobiotechnology

Brief description

“Nanobiotechnology and Biophysics” is intended for prospective highly qualified professionals with in-depth knowledge in of modern biophysics, molecular biology and nanobiotechnology. After completing the course Master shall be able to put and solve problems related to fundamental theoretical and experimental research and applications in different areas of modern nanobiotechnology in a variety of objects (molecules, quantum dots, colloidal nanostructures, cells, biochips, crystals, etc.), and apply up-to-date methods of biophysics, biochemistry, molecular biology, biotechnology and bioinformatics to obtain new knowledge and also to develop effective methodology. Our graduates shall have not only theoretical knowledge, but shall be fluent in modern physico-chemical and biotechnological methods, making use of precise methodology to effective gain signal and the spectral information from live cells. We also expect him/her to be well-aware of the principles of how biotech markets run.

Description

The program is focused at problems of modern nanobiotechnology, biophysics and proteomics, and hence it consists of the two parts: lectures/seminars and laboratory work. The first part covers classical theory and methods (ASM, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray crystallography, nuclear and electron paramagnetic resonance, etc). Particular attention is paid to novel nanotechnology-based methods for characterization of proteins, nucleic acids and their complexes. The second part deals with protein functioning and protein-protein interactions, quantitative and qualitative analysis of specific molecular groups and their effects on protein function in vitro and in silico.

Competencies

The course forms comprehensive knowledge of problems and prospective of modern nanobiotechnology and biophysics for progressive development of biosensors and functional  proteomics in the post-genomic era, and its biological and medical applications. Key courses shall be Nanosystems and Nanodevices; Optical Microscopy, Biophysics of membrane processes, Molecular Genomics and Gene Engineering, Nanostructured Materials,  Nanosctructure Biosynthesis,  Membrane and Nuclear Medicine,  Bioinformatics.Special attention is to be paid to growth points in nanobiotechnology, application of signaling molecules and cells to create high molecular diagnostic methods (plasmon resonance to enhance Raman scattering, obtaining structured nanoplate and crystals), production of instruments for monitoring the processing of bio-resources for health and environmental protection. Masters will be prepared for employment in the area of scientific research and higher education (biotechnology businesses, consulting companies and the pharmacological profile of nanobiotechnology) worldwide.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of the physics of macromolecules, biophysics, biochemistry and computer databases. A Bachelor degree is required.

F.A.Q.

Q: Why do you say “Faculty of Biology”, and not “School of Biology”?

A: It’s a tradition to call divisions of the University Faculties in Russia (and in other countries as well). This reflects the fact that education and research are united under one roof. Lomonosov Moscow State University has also Schools and Institutes focused more at education and research respectively.

Q: Can I come for a semester if I do not want to apply for degree?

A: Yes you can.

Q: If I have to travel to the White Sea Biological Station to do some research for my Master project, do I have to cover travel expenses, meals and housing?

A: Travel expenses and housing at the Biological Stations will be covered by the Faculty of Biology, as doing Master project is an essential part of the curriculum. Meals have to be paid separately.

Q: Shall I pay for the whole course, or can I do it in parts?

A: Our regulations presume that students pay twice a year.

Q: What if I want to apply for a Bachelor course? What if I want to apply for a Master course other than listed here? What about PhD courses?
